HOW DID YOU GET INTERESTED IN MAKEUP AND BECOME A MAKEUP ARTIST?
When I was in Cosmetology school a freelance makeup artist did a demo for our class. From then on I knew I wanted to continue my education by adding makeup artistry to my business. Plus I'm a huge horror movie fan and I always wanted to learn special effects
DO YOU HAVE A FORMAL ARTS BACKGROUND?
I have always been involved in the arts somehow. Ive taken classes in High School and College for Dance, Painting, Photography, Drawing...etc
YOU WORK ON A LOT OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF SHOOTS, WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT CHALLENGES FOR EACH GENRE?
Sometimes its difficult to make the model I'm working on understand the looks. They are used to Glamour shoots or Beauty shoots. But when it is for a pin up or Era shoot, like the 20s flapper or the 50s pin up, it needs to look authentic. The beauty trends are different from each era. For example the big victory rolls and over emphasized red lips from the 50s looks very different from the typical glamour styles they are used to. But once they see the photos they always end up loving it!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE AN ASPIRING MAKEUP ARTIST JUST STARTING OUT?
My best advice is to not ever think you are too good to do work for free. I had a lot of friends get out of makeup school and only take paid jobs. They did not make it in the business. I spent a good year networking and shooting for free. Sometimes you get nothing from it but other times you make lifelong business connections! The second most important is always be on time! Your not going to get hired again if your the cause of a delayed shoot.
CLASSIC PINUP HAS BECOME A HUGE PHENOMENA LATELY, WHAT ABOUT IT FIRST CAPTURED YOUR INTEREST?
I love the drama of it. Everything is bold and bright. Bright red lips, long fluttering lashes, super high heels. Its very fun for me to be able to use color with my work as opposed to the neutrals of basic beauty. And Everything is so feminine and sexy without being... well slutty LOL
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT PINUP BECOMING PART OF THE MAINSTREAM CULTURE?
I think its great. I'm not one to turn my back on something I like just because its "mainstream". It just means the rest of the world got smart!
WHAT IS IT THAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT PINUP MODELING?
When I'm modeling as opposed to just doing hair and makeup, its kind of like I get to play too! I love all aspects of my job and I don't like to be left out of any of it. Pin Up modeling is my favorite because I get to do my favorite kind of hair and makeup on myself. And I'm not a skinny or super tall fashion model. I love pin up because it celebrates women's natural curves.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER CREATIVE MEDIUMS YOU WORK IN?
Yes I also do wardrobe styling, art directing, pose coaching and I'm a writer.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TYPES OF OUTFITS TO MODEL IN?
I love anything vintage or anything out of the norm. I hate to do the typical swimsuit shoot!
WHAT IS IT ABOUT TATTOOS THAT INTRIGUES YOU?
Its a piece of art and I'm the canvas. I love it because every one of my tattoos represents someone or a time in my life. They remind me of who I am and where I've been.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE?
This is always a hard question to answer because I cant narrow it down. I love and hate music from every style. Right now I'm on a bluegrass kick! But I also love blues, pop, rock, country, reggae... Not too into classical or opera though.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?
For fun I love to hang out in dive bars or sit by the beach. But I don't get much time for fun. I'm sort of a workaholic!
