WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PICK UP A CAMERA?
I wanted to impress a girl. She's a model so I said I was going to take her picture. I borrowed my mom's Polaroid camera and she laughed at my camera. She showed me her portfolio and that's when I decided I want to take professional photos like that. My first camera is a loaner from my dad which is an Olympus OM1.
WHAT PARTICULAR CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE WITH EROTIC PHOTOGRAPHY AS OPPOSED TO OTHER GENRES?
I don't really do much erotic photography. My style is more artsy and sexy. The challenge? Art is subjective so it's easy to make art. Anyone can do that. It's also easy to do sexy. Photographers doing sexy stuff are a dime a dozen. Combining sexy and art is not as easy and the challenge is to create something interesting, unique, and non-cliche.
DO YOU PREFER TO SHOOT WITH FILM OR DIGITAL?
I shot film for many years. The new medium is digital so I have adapted. I still hod a high regard to photographers who shot in film before shooting digital.
WHAT KIND OF SHOOTS WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK ON IN THE FUTURE?
I would like to do more landscape photography. I used to do a lot of landscape when I was using film. It's easier with digital because I can also post process way beyond what a darkroom of the past can offer. Photoshop changed the way we present our images. It's very cool.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR ANYONE JUST STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?
Learn the basics. I started teaching photography and post processing to photographers because they see my photos and ask me how I did them. At first I was quick to offer tips but later on I noticed that the same people were pretty much asking the same questions. I realized then that most of these so called "professional photographers", even those offering workshops, are lacking in basic fundamentals of photography and Photoshop. So I started teaching advanced techniques using basic principles and fundamentals. So my advice once again: learn the basics first.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER CREATIVE MEDIUMS YOU WORK IN?
I used to do charcoal drawings years ago.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE?
I like every kind of music except rap. Anything you cannot put onto a music sheet, I don't consider music.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?
When you get to be my age, you set up every single day so that it will be a fun day. There are stressful days you cannot avoid; you just reward yourself with a good dinner, a movie, or a massage at the end of the day.
