WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PICK UP A CAMERA?
I got into it through animation. Taking reference photos of people in positions to sketch from. I found the interaction fun as well as playing with all the settings on the camera to see what they done. I then done some photos for a friend who needed a shot for a poster quick. Her friends liked it and asked me to do more photos and so on. I gave myself a year of doing it to see if there was any money to be made and that was nearly 8 years ago.
WHAT PARTICULAR CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE WITH EROTIC PHOTOGRAPHY AS OPPOSED TO OTHER GENRES?
There are many challenges:
Making it erotic and without being pornographic. This comes down to angles, use of light, positioning as well as location sometimes.
Sometimes you could be photographing someone you have never met before. Photographing something sexual, erotic and sometimes very personal. It has the potential to be VERY awkward and that always comes across in the photos. You have to be good at helping the model relax and help them realize it's not a big deal. Communication and preparation is essential so you both know exactly what, where and how a shoot is going to go down. Being honest and as nice as possible is always a bonus.
I have been shooting an adult set once and half way through the model and I just ended up stopping and talking for about an hour about politics and other nonsense. I've also been on shoots that were not meant to be erotic and ended up completely out of control. That's the fun thing about photographing people, you never know what is going to happen!
One of the things I am most proud of is people telling me how comfortable they felt once the shoot is finished, it makes me feel fantastic. I've shot people nude that have said they wouldn't do it with anyone else.
There was one client doing a sexy boudoir shoot for her husband. She had never been naked in front of anyone but him and they have been together since school. Having someone tell you that and then thank you for making it so easy is an incredibly humbling experience.
DO YOU PREFER TO SHOOT WITH FILM OR DIGITAL?
I said when I started, "What's the point in film? I'll never use it". After I done a 'Darkroom' module in college, where we took and developed our own black and white film photographs, I was hooked on film. Getting it right the first time and also the awesome effects you get by accident on film. I'm obsessed with Lomography after a shop I worked for began stocking them. Using expired film to get weird results. It's SO MUCH fun! *Points to my underwater fisheye camera*
WHAT KIND OF SHOOTS WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK ON IN THE FUTURE?
I like clear, colorful and natural shots mostly. After working in a studio for years I am looking to embrace nature a little. If only the weather here in the UK was better for photographers. I do have a very large dark streak inside me though so will always be fond of the alternative and glamorous. Finally, being a geek, I want MORE cosplay!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR ANYONE JUST STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?
Be honest and take photographs all the time. Literally, the more you take the more you learn as you see what settings work where and when. Contact people, ask questions and use anyone you can as a model. I am so jealous of these stunning photographers who can just take photographs of themselves all day for practice.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER CREATIVE MEDIUMS YOU WORK IN?
In my past I have done graphic design, website design and animation. I tried to design something recently though and have forgotten all the little tricks! Nothing was anywhere near as fun as photography and I don't miss any of them. Although, the web design has come in handy for editing profiles and website pages.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE?
I was brought up an indie kid but always preferred a bit more grunge to my friends. Think Green Day, Foo Fighters, Ash as they were my favorite bands growing up. These days I like a bit of metal and obviously, my Scottish fellows Biffy Clyro, to keep me awake while editing. Although an occasional Taylor Swift or some other chart nonsense can pop up here and there.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?
I am sadly a massive geek! Movies, photos and computer games mostly (when my old computer lets me). I don't go out and party as much as I would like to, too busy being a grown up.
I am going to just mention this as I want as much publicity as I can get if you don't mind?
WHAT PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE?
I am almost finished a project called 'Life is Pants'. It's a fun, tongue in cheek look at how girls wear different pants for different events/moments in their lives. I mainly just like bums and underwear and had SO many photos I thought I'd make this for myself and if anyone else enjoyed it then great. Keep an eye on Kickstarter for the full project details coming soon but meanwhile here is a link to the teaser video... It's sexy but there is no nudity!
