WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PICK UP A CAMERA?
Well it certainly wasn't the money! I can’t draw or paint and I’ve always been a creative person – I’ve written poetry for as long as I can remember, some of them aren’t that bad either ;) but that never satisfied the visual creativity that was frustrating me. My father and grandfather were both award winning amateur ‘togs and as I got older I saw it as an outlet but I only got serious about it when I went to a well known chain of “studios” with our first baby and they were charging like £1500 for good sized print! I thought “f**k that! I’ll do it my bloody self!” so I did. I’m very lucky that there’s a fantastic 2000ft studio just down the road from my house that I can use and a load of really great models regularly come down to it.
WHAT PARTICULAR CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE WITH EROTIC PHOTOGRAPHY AS OPPOSED TO OTHER GENRES?
Not many really, overcoming my own shyness has been a bit of a hurdle but as most of my friends are 'alternative' anyway there's certainly no social stigma to worry about – they're just jealous! Anyway, it's the models who have to do the hard work, not me . The major challenge is finding the time and models to get everything out of my head!
DO YOU PREFER TO SHOOT WITH FILM OR DIGITAL?
Digital, definitely digital! Well, that's not actually true. I like how easy it is to experiment with digital, not to mention the instant gratification but there's something about film that keeps pulling me back. I still shoot black and white from the old OM-1 which was passed to me from my father and to him from his.
HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN FETISH/BDSM?
Everyone has a little dark in them, some more than others. I guess it's just a manifestation of some of mine. I've always been interested in the darker side of the human condition. I like the imagery, the materials, the stories you can tell and how accepting most of the counter culture community are of concepts that would worry the mainstream.
DO YOU ENJOY FETISHISM/BDSM PLAY IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE, AND IF SO WHAT ARE YOU INTO?
Bah! Chance’d be a fine thing! I’ve got four kids all under 7 so I’m just grateful to get anything!
DO YOU THINK PINUP AND FETISH ARE BECOMING PART OF THE MAINSTREAM CULTURE?
Not really, and neither do I think it should. Mainstream culture has always been whatever the media tells us it is, they take an idea and water it down until there’s nothing left of the original concept but a neatly marketable package that they can profit from and would any of us be interested in that? Pinup wasn’t mainstream in the 50’s, sure everyone loved Marylin Monroe and Betty Page but very few people would have been happy for their daughters to end up like them. Counter culture like any culture evolves keeping it always one step removed from the mainstream. Halterneck dresses and high heels (that showed entirely too much skin for the 40’s) are mainstream now but pinup has evolved, it’s concept and ideals have remained the same but the social environment that those ideals are applied to have changed. Just look at the suicide girls and Robert Alverado.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER CREATIVE MEDIUMS YOU WORK IN?
Does cooking count? Seriously tho. I still write poetry from time to time (but don’t tell anyone – I’ve got a reputation to think about!) It’s a good outlet, getting things down on paper and out of my head – it’s probably saved a lot of people over the years…
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE?
Pretty much anything with passion, I’m listening to a lot of Black Stone Cherry at the moment, them and Seasick Steve. But there’s always room for some Disturbed or Slipknot ;
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?
Apart from having four kids under 7?
To be honest, I take pictures for fun. I’d still do it even if I didn’t make any money.
But I like to cook, listen to music, watch old movies, play video games, go for long walks off short cliffs – the usual stuff.
The only unusual thing really is that I train with some of the finest swordsmen and pugilists in Europe – the mighty 1595 club. It’s my other passion, just watch the video on the website and you’ll see why.
