WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PICK UP A CAMERA?
I was drifting aimlessly as an Art major in college, not knowing what I wanted to go into or how I could make a living after graduation. Then the first semester of my junior year I took a Photography class (I had never even owned a camera before that), and instantly fell in love with it and knew what I wanted to do. I changed within the art department to a Photography major and practically lived in the darkroom for the next two years. This was in the early 80s, long before digital. So everything was done on black + white or color negative film, or slide film.
WHAT PARTICULAR CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE WITH EROTIC PHOTOGRAPHY AS OPPOSED TO OTHER GENRES?
I suppose just being taken seriously. There's a lot of snickering that goes on when someone first sees my work. People assuming all kinds of crazy things, that have absolutely no foundation in the way photographers work in reality. Also sometimes it's a challenge and a necessity to keep my erotic work and my legitimate work (family portraits, senior pictures) separate. High School kids and their parents don't always appreciate the erotic work.
DO YOU PREFER TO SHOOT WITH FILM OR DIGITAL?
Although I learned on film, I don't even own a film camera anymore. When you start out on film, you learn quickly that every frame you shoot is valuable, especially on a broke college students income! You had to buy film, chemistry, paper, and all the time that went into getting it processed made you not want to waste a single frame.
Nowadays, with digital it's bang, bang, bang, bang, as fast as you can click the shutter, and hope for maybe 1 out of 20 to turn out good. Coming from film - I try to make sure that every frame is a winner.
HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN FETISH/BDSM?
I've always been a huge fan of Pinup Photography from the 50s, even back to the Pinup painters of the 30s and 40s. Of course Bettie Page is the queen of Pinup Photography, and rightfully so. I really like her fetish stuff with Irving Claw too. When you look at it today, it looks so innocent and naive, and that's what draws you in. They really knew how to make lingerie back then too!
DO YOU ENJOY FETISHISM/BDSM PLAY IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE, AND IF SO WHAT ARE YOU INTO?
Ha, you have to get to know me a lot better to find that out!
DO YOU THINK PINUP AND FETISH ARE BECOMING PART OF THE MAINSTREAM CULTURE?
Very much so. That stuff used to just be whispered about in back rooms. And when you look at the old stuff today... well, you can see racier stuff on Saturday morning cartoons.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER CREATIVE MEDIUMS YOU WORK IN?
I used to draw and paint and sculpt, but now I do most of my artwork on the computer, in Photoshop.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE?
I used to like anything that was brand new and fresh. If it was 6 months old I was through with it. But now that I'm middle aged, I'm rediscovering the music of my youth. I'm lucky to have grown up in the late 70s to mid 80s - when the BEST music was being made. I recently saw 'The Runaways' movie. That's Good Stuff!
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?
I'm lucky that my favorite hobby is also my job. I love shooting pictures.
I also like to go boating and play Frisbee in the summer.
In the spring and fall I like to play paintball. I play woodsballs with a bunch of off-duty cops, and I kick their asses all over the field!
