WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PICK UP A CAMERA?
Mainly my friends, during my teen years, most of them were angsty and distressed and had a lot of, lets say, issues. I have always gravitated towards very extreme people. But to me they were beautiful in their own way. I wanted to capture that weird, offbeat, tortured beauty that I saw in them. And that is still why I shoot. I still mainly shoot people that I know on a rather personal level. I am horrible at "networking", per say. I probably shouldn't even be on public networking sites! It is easier for me to have an idea of how I want to capture someone when I know what their personal passions or drive is.
WHAT PARTICULAR CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE WITH EROTIC PHOTOGRAPHY AS OPPOSED TO OTHER GENRES?
For me erotic photography is something I would not try to do with someone upon first shooting. I usually start off with something conceptual first. I prefer to get to know someones features and form through the lens a few times, before I can start to envision how to capture them correctly in an obvious, erotic way. I think my brain kind of likens it to the natural time line of getting to know someone then moving into a dating relationship.
DO YOU PREFER TO SHOOT WITH FILM OR DIGITAL?
I have been shooting film since high school, and am the most comfortable with it. To be honest with you, digital is not my forte. I only recently even acquired a decent digital camera, courtesy of my best friend Nick Dillinger, who shoots as well (both mediums). He has been helping me get used to shooting digital more. But I see a quality to film that just isn't there with digital. Film just has a certain magic to it.
HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN FETISH/BDSM?
I high school a lot of the musicians I admired worked with Richard Kern, so that was sort of my introduction to fetish photography and films. I was inspired by musicians such as Lydia Lunch and Kembra Pfahler, who had such interesting looks and were so open in front of the camera.
DO YOU ENJOY FETISHISM/BDSM PLAY IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE, AND IF SO WHAT ARE YOU INTO?
Oddly enough I am kind of not the most instantaneous person sexually. I am a bit of a prude at first ;) But if people want to picture me as the girl who has hot women tied up and bobbing for apples in the basement, then we will roll with that ;)
ARE THERE ANY OTHER CREATIVE MEDIUMS YOU WORK IN?
I played rhythm guitar for two years in a band called Death Of Venus, and currently just formed a band called Denature. I used to make these really intricate collages, but that was during a rather depressing part of my life. Now I keep them boxed up in the closet because it hurts to look at them.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE?
A lot of my favorite artists seem to start with the letter "B". Not quite sure how that happened. Favorites include: Bauhaus, Black Flag, The Beach Boys, and Babes In Toyland. I love a wide variety of genres. I love learning about the history of female musicians, and try to collect the most obscure and strange records of female artists that I can find for listening to at night. Usually makes for interesting background music for photo editing.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?
I like to explore and learn. I feel as though I need constant new visual stimulation. I like to learn and see anything involving the history of my native state. I am a sucker for wildlife refuges, state parks, trespassing, and old military buildings. I also am a bit of a solitary creature who has a hankering for military history. I spend a lot of quality time with documentaries, the History Channel, and me and my sister regularly scout used book stores. Also since I shoot mainly at night, I like to scout for awesome night time lighting.
