YOU HAVE A NEW CD CALLED CHO DEPENDENT, CAN YOU TELL US HOW IT CAME ABOUT?
I wanted to make a comedy album with beautiful music, songs that would endure beyond the joke, and I wanted to work with my favorite artists like Ani Difranco and Jon Brion and Andrew bBrd. I wrote all the lyrics, they wrote the music. We got together and made a record. It was a tremendous experience!
A LOT OF GREAT MUSICIANS APPEAR ON CHO DEPENDENT, WHAT WAS THE COLLABORATION PROCESS LIKE?
I would send the lyrics ahead of time and then we would either sit down and write or send mp3s back and forth. It was slightly different with every person. Sometimes we would work in the studio, sometimes we did it all over phone and email. It was an exciting and thrilling thing to collaborate with so many people I love.
YOU'RE TOURING TO SUPPORT CHO DEPENDENT, HOW WILL THIS TOUR BE DIFFERENT THAN YOUR PREVIOUS SHOWS?
Its all new standup material, with a few songs in there, but primarily it is a standup comedy show but I'm having fun singing.
DO YOU THINK THE SAME AUDIENCE FOLLOWS YOU FROM COMEDY TO ACTING TO MUSIC OR IS IT DIFFERENT GROUPS OF PEOPLE?
I don't really know! I'm sure there is crossover there but I can't say really!
YOUR SHOW DROP DEAD DIVA CHALLENGES CONVENTIONAL NOTIONS OF BEAUTY, WHAT DO YOU THINK BEAUTY IS OR THINK THE CONSENSUS IDEA OF BEAUTY SHOULD BE?
I think beauty is however we define it. We are by nature beautiful because existence is beautiful. Life is beautiful. Everyone has a right to it and everyone should celebrate their own beauty.
YOU'VE PUT ON A BURLESQUE SHOW CALLED THE SENSUOUS WOMAN, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PUT THAT TOGETHER?
This was a show I loved doing! Burlesque is such a fantastic art form and I wanted to have a show that combined burlesque with standup comedy and music. it was a beautiful show and someday I will do it again.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT BURLESQUE THAT CAPTURES YOUR INTEREST?
Its sexy and it celebrates women in such a fabulous way. Its glamorous and fun and infinitely creative.
YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY MULTI TALENTED, DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER HIDDEN TALENTS WE DON'T KNOW ABOUT YET?
I can sew very well! I actually made the incredible jeweled feathered cape I'm wearing on the back of the Chodependent album. Making clothing is very time consuming though! And I only make very elaborate costume items, so I don't think I'd ever mass produce.
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH AND START SUPPORTING THE LGBT COMMUNITY?
I started working as a standup comic in gay bars and was doing a lot of aids benefits in the late 80s and early 90s in San Francisco. the queer community is my community. Its where my life is, where my friends are, who I am!
HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN FETISH/BDSM?
I worked at stormy leather in San Francisco as a teenager and got into the scene that way. I love sf and its massive leather community. Its very queer, very political and essentially where I grew up.
DO YOU ENJOY FETISHISM/BDSM PLAY IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE, AND IF SO WHAT ARE YOU INTO?
I used to be way more into it than I am now, but hopefully that will change. I love it all but there's little time for me to play these days!
WHAT IS IT ABOUT TATTOOS THAT INTRIGUES YOU?
Its in your skin, its primal, its tribal, its very creative, they look beautiful, they are a personal history. There are so many reasons.
DO YOU THINK FETISH IS BECOMING PART OF THE MAINSTREAM CULTURE?
I think its always been a part of fashion and mainstream, especially since Madonna!
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?
I love to play music with my friends, go see music, get artificially inseminated by drag queens, abuse latisse and ride bikes all over Provincetown.
